COMENTARIO Y PRINCIPALES GANADORES EMMY 2010

Al ver los principales galardonados de esta noche en la gala de los premios Emmy me sentí bastante aliviado. La verdad es que se hizo justicia. “Mad men” es una maravilla y comparar a “Glee” con “Modern family” me parece hasta casi un insulto. Es cierto que me hubiese alegrado enormemente de la victoria en drama de “Breaking bad” pero seamos francos, ¡que más da! Son la segunda y la tercera mejor serie de televisión que he visto (¿superarán a “Los Soprano”?, sólo el tiempo lo dirá).



Sus competidoras eran meras espectadoras. “Lost” no ha llegado a las expectativas esperadas, “Dexter” es tan apasionante como tramposa, “The good wife” es demasiado clásica y “True blood” comienza a oler demasiado mal. Y en comedia no hay duda: “Modern family” es una joya.

El mejor actor es sin duda alguna Cranston (en la primera imagen), ganador por tercer año consecutivo. Aunque Dexter y House merecen ser premiados, contra Cranston hay poco que hacer. El mejor actor secundario es también Aaron Paul. Su entrañable Pinkman ha crecido capítulo tras capítulo y ya hasta le hace una preciosa sombra a Cranston. Lo siento realmente por mi queridísimo Emerson (Ben Linnus en “Lost”) pero lo cierto es que “Breaking bad” me tiene cautivado y no sé reconocer ya el gran trabajo realizado por Emerson.

En mejor actor secundario de comedia podría haber ganado cualquiera. Este año le ha tocado a Eric Stonestreet (en la imagen inferior) por su entrañable papel de Cameron en “Modern family” pero cualquiera de sus compañeros de reparto podría haber ganado. En actriz secundaria me encantan Rose Byrne y Elisabeth Moss. La primera no ha vencido por que “Damages” ha perdido bastante fuelle y la segunda porque esta no ha sido precisamente su temporada. No pasa nada, otra vez será Moss, aunque espero que no te suceda como a Sandra Oh (Christina en “Anatomía de Grey”) que esperó tanto que se le pasó el arroz.

Que la mejor dirección de comedia no sea para “Modern family” es casi un insulto, y que haya ganado “Dexter” en el apartado de drama es justicia, aunque la dirección del capítulo nominado por “Breaking bad” pueda ser el episodio mejor dirigido que jamás he visto. Por otro lado, que el mejor de drama sea para “Mad men” es lo más justo, pues no hay nadie como ellos para regalarnos semanalmente episodios tan apasionantes en los que, aparentemente, no ocurre nada.



La gran perdedora de la noche es “Lost” algo que no me sorprende. Sus compañeras de nominación estaban muy por encima de ella. Todas las nominaciones sonaban más a reconocimiento que a otra cosa. Por otro lado, me hubiese gustado que “24”, ya que ha sido su última temporada, hubiese tenido más presencia en esto premios, como reconocimiento a la serie más adictiva que he visto, pero la verdad es que ya ha sido bastante galardonada en las pasadas 7 ediciones.

Ya sólo nos queda esperar un año para ver quién vencerá en los próximos Emmy, en los que ya se vaticina una holgadísima victoria de “Mad men”. Y es que los seguidores de “Breaking bad” tendremos que esperar más de un año para ver los próximos episodios de la serie, por lo que no la veremos compitiendo en los Emmy de 2011. Se hará larga la espera. No pasa nada. “Mad men”, “Modern family” y esperemos que alguna que otra nueva serie amenizarán larga espera.

NUESTRAS SERIES FAVORITAS SE BATEN EN DUELO

Como ya hemos comentado en el post anterior, hoy es el gran día. La televisión se viste con sus mejores galas para demostrar un año más su buena salud y su ya probada calidad. Y, si hay algo que brilla en el panorama televisivo actual americano son sus series de televisión, que son para muchos la mejor literatura del momento. Sea esto cierto o no, la verdad es que en nuestros días existen un buen puñado de series maravillosas que hoy se verán las caras. ¿Volverán a copar “Mad men” y “30 rock” las principales categorías? Estamos a pocas horas de saberlo.

Pretendía escribir sobre cuales eran las favoritas (sin duda alguna “Glee” y “Mad men”), pero la verdad es que cada año los Emmy me sorprenden, por lo que me limitaré a decir cuales son las que yo votaría.

Sin duda alguna, en las dos categorías principales me decanto por la revelación del año, “Modern family” y por la inmejorable “Breakin g bad”. La primera me gusta por original, fresca y divertida. Es de lejos la mejor comedia del momento y está muy por encima de la favorita y sobrevaloradísima “Glee”. En drama tengo que reconocer que “Mad men” es maravillosa, pero “Breaking bad” es, con perdón de”Los Soprano”, la mejor serie de televisión que he visto. Aún así, “Lost” podría dar la sorpresa, con un premio que reconocería su brillante trayectoria, pero la infima calidad de su última temporada ha lastrado su posición de clara favorita al comienzo del año. Aún así no podemos olvidar que la serie ya ganó el principal Emmy en una ocasión.


En las categorías actorales, me gustaría que premiasen por tercera vez a Bryan Cranston (en la imagen) por su emotiva actuación del complejo protagonista de “Breaking bad” y que su compañero de reparto Aaron Paul (cada temporada más grande) lo hiciese como secundario. También me haría especial ilusión que la guapa Rose Byrne ganase el premio a la mejor actriz secundaria por el drama legal “Damages” y que Toni Colette volviese a alzarse como la reina de la comedia americana gracias a su papel en “United states of Tara”. TOY STORY PULVERIZA TAQUILLAS

Hace un par de semanas que Toy Story noqueó a Buscando a Nemo y se convirtió en la película de Pixar más taquillera de su historia. Pero ahí no se queda la cosa. La nueva película de animación está convirtiendo en una locura el recuento de entradas vendidas tal y como revelan los datos hoy publicados...

Toy Story 3 acaba de alcanzar la asombrosa cifra de taquilla de MIL MILLONES DE DÓLARES. De hecho, es la segunda película de Disney que consigue estos ingresos en 2010 (la primera fue Alicia en el País de las Maravillas, cuyos méritos son más que discutibles).

De esta manera, Disney se convierte en el único estudio cinematográfico de la historia que consigue hacer dos mil millones de dólares de taquilla en un solo año. No obstante, el estudio de los sueños ha tenido sus sonados fallos este año, como El Príncipe de Persia (que fue una absoluta basura). Parece que la constancia no es lo que caracteriza a Disney. Tan pronto están en la cresta de la ola con la película mejor valorada del año (Toy Story 3) como se hunden el la miseria con producciónes cuyo destino es el vertedero.

EL ÚLTIMO ADIÓS DE LOST

¿Te dice algo 23 de Mayo de 2010? ¿Te levantaste ese día a las 5 de la madrugada por placer? Si es así, eres un Losti y, si eres un Losti, esto te interesará. Aunque la serie nos abandonó para siempre el citado día, regresa por última vez el próximo 13 de septiembre.

Atención, seguidores acérrimos de Lost, si queréis demostrar verdaderamente vuestra devoción por la mítica serie habréis de volar a Londres para enfrentaros al máximo reto Losti: ver los 121 capítulos de la serie ininterrumpidamente en una maratón pública.

Sí, sí, como lo habéis leído. La maratón tendrá lugar en el cine Leicester Square's Prince Charles (si no os dice nada, lo ponéis en Google Maps y listo). El evento durará tres días (desde el 13 de septiembre hasta el 16). ¿El motivo? Celebrar el lanzamiento en DVD de la última temporada.

Y os preguntaréis ¿cuántas horas implica ver desde el primerísimo, primer episodio hasta el último? Nada más y nada menos que 80, por lo que, si hacemos el cálculo, tres días son 72 horas, lo que significa que los asistentes tendrán 8 horas de descanso (supongo que las horas que habrá que hacer cola para ir al baño).


Debe ser por eso que la organización invita a los asistentes a que se disfracen de sus personajes favoritos y que elaboren su propio pack de supervivencia con sacos de dormir, almohadas y comida. Eso sí, una bolsa con artículos de merchandising de Lost será otorgada a los 280 afortunados que consigan cruzar las puertas del cine a las 10 de la mañana del lunes 13 de septiembre.

El director del cine, Gregory Lynn, ha dicho que está muy ilusionado por acoger un evento así en su establecimiento.

BOURNE PARECE HABER ENCONTRADO SUSTITUTA

Una nueva saga parece que está a punto de confirmarse. Los grandes magnates de Hollywood llevaban tiempo buscando una nueva serie de agentes secretos con la que poder arrasar. Tras finalizar la trilogía de “El caso Bourne” con unos buenos resultados tanto en taquilla como de críticas, las grandes majors andaban a la caza una nueva franquicia con la que repetir la millonaria repercusión conseguida por el agente amnésico. Y puede ser que “Salt”, lo último de la parte femenina Brangelina sea su gran sustituta.

Además, esta nueva saga cuenta con un aliciente realmente interesante para la taquilla. El héroe es una mujer. Pero para que esto se haga realidad, la superproducción tiene que continuar haciendo los buenos números que está cosechando en el resto de países en los que aún no se ha estrenado (entre los que está España) y conseguir unas buenas ventas tanto en DVD como en Blue – ray. Pero todo parece indicar que se superarán las expectativas y la segunda parte de esta nueva franquicia será finalmente llevada a cabo.


Ante estos rumores, el guionista (Philip Noyce) y el director (Kurt Wimmer) no han dicho nada, al igual que la propia Jolie, que sostienen no tener confirmación oficial, pero ninguno ha negado la posibilidad de trabajar en una posible segunda parte. En España, para ver esta película tendremos que esperar al viernes.

Hace una semana y media, James Cameron confirmó un secreto a voces en una entrevista que concedió a la MTV: tenía en mente realizar una secuela de Avatar. Ayer, iba más lejos: no quiere una, sino DOS películas más y quiere que la película que sigue a la que ya ha visto el 99% del planeta transcurra en las profundidades de los océanos de Pandora...



En la entrevista que concedió a MTV, James Cameron decía que sí, que le apetecía hacer otra película de Avatar que continuase la historia con los personajes que ya conocemos, pero que antes tenía dos proyectos no cinematográficos en mente y que, además, tenía que llegar a un acuerdo con el estudio. Sin embargo, parece que el gusanillo le picó durante la entrevista, porque no ha tardado ni una semana y media en ampliar la información.


"Quiero que haya personajes bajo el agua, por lo que creo que es necesario que los capturemos allí. Ya teníamos un amplio diseño para el entorno de Avatar. No sólo de Pandora, sino de todo el sistema AB Alpha Centauri. Queremos expandir la historia a más partes del sistema, no necesariamente en la segunda película, sino más bien en la tercera. Mi intención principal en la segunda es que la historia se desarrolle en un entorno completamente distinto, un escenario diferente dentro de Pandora. Me voy a centrar en el océano de Pandora, porque puede ser muy rico, diverso, loco y puede dar mucho pie a la imaginación. No estoy diciendo que no vayamos a ver cosas que ya conocemos, sólo digo que veremos más aun" (James Cameron).


Esta información no nos pilla por sorpresa dada su conocida debilidad por el buceo y su antigua relación cinematográfica con el agua (Titanic y The Abyss). De momento, lo único seguro es el inminente RE-estreno del mega-ultra-taquillazo Avatar en las salas de cine con 9 minutos extra de película. Respecto a esto, Cameron ha añadido que las versiones en BluRay y DVD incluirán hasta 17 minutos más (aunque tendremos la opción de elegir si vemos la película tal cual o con esos minutos extra).

Los posos del final del Summer TCA

¿Quéréis saber algunos adelantos frescos para la siguiente temporada? La TCA (Television Critics Association) es un grupo de unos 200 periodistas y críticos de EE.UU. y Canadá que cubren la programación televisiva de Norteamérica. Dos veces al año se reúnen en Los Ángeles (Enero y Julio) donde las grandes Networks les presentan las propuestas televisivas para la siguiente temporada (en fiestas a las que ya nos gustaría acudir a más de uno). La reunión de verano (Summer TCA) ha terminado y, a continuación, os dejamos datos llamativos que se han hablado en ella...


Parece que Big Bang Theory está pegando muy fuerte porque será movida en la parrilla al espacio privilegiado de la semana: prime time del jueves. Por su parte, CSI presentará a su nueva estrellita en su premiere. Nos referimos a Justin Bieber, cuyo personaje tendrá un encontronazo con los CSI's que se resolverá durante la temporada. Por último, tras dos años recibiendo recibido una muy mala puntuación por parte de GLAAD (Alianza Gay y Lésbica contra la Difamación) han decidido aumentar el número de personajes gays y lésbicos emitidos en su cadena. Han añadido líneas argumentales LGBT a The Good Wife, Rules of Engagement y $#*! My Dad Says.

Los temas principales que se trataron fueron el próximo estreno de Undercovers (la última de J. J. Abrams y Josh Reims), la salida de Steve Carell del casting de The Office y de cómo será reemplazado; y si The Event conseguirá cubrir los huecos dejados por 24 y Lost. Si esto es lo más interesante de lo que hablan en las reuniones de NBC, no nos extraña que no levanten cabeza en cuestión de audiencias.




El punto clave de la reunión se resume en: el jefe de comunicación de ABC, Kevin Brockman, intentando eludir en todo momento tener que hablar de la reciente dimisión de Steve McPherson, director del departamento de entretenimiento de ABC, debido a la investigación interna por acoso sexual. Para contrarrestar, Modern Family se llevó el premio TCA a mejor comedia. Las novedades de la network son Detroit 1-8-7, un drama policiaco que no entusiasmó en la reunión; No ordinary family, que mezcla drama familiar con superhéroes y en la que actuará Michael Chiklis; y que Maura Tierney sustituirá a Joely Richardson en The Whole Truth.

Es difícil sacar alguna información que no tenga que ver con American Idol, programa del que no se paró de hablar en la fiesta organizada por la network the Murdoch y del que no pensamos hablar porque nos importa un pimiento en España. Lo único que se salvó del reality-basura fue la lectura que se hizo del sangriento episodio de Navidad de American Dad y que la preview de Terra Nova (la producida por Spielberg) tiene fecha para mayo antes de su estreno en otoño del año que viene.



Qué pena que estas cosas no se hagan también con los canales del cable. Seguro que podríamos hablar de cosas mucho más interesantes. Pero más vale algo que nada.

Reflexión sobre el cine palomitero

¿Habéis visto ya Origen, la nueva película de Christopher Nolan? Si no la habéis visto, no os preocupéis porque este post no va a destriparos nada. Este post ha sido escrito porque hay algunos/as que tildan al cine de Nolan de PALOMITERO. Palomitero… qué palabra. Creo que si lo buscas en el DRAE no encontrarás resultados, pero, en cualquier caso, es una palabra que no tiene nada que ver con las historias que Nolan cuenta en la pantalla. Seguid leyendo y me entenderéis.

Thriller, comedia, drama, acción, romance… podría tirarme todo el día enumerando géneros cinematográficos (parece que con cada estreno nace uno nuevo). Sin embargo, los tipos de películas pueden reducirse a tres perfectamente (sí, sólo tres [3]). Esto no lo digo yo, lo dice el señor Aristóteles.

Según él, para llegar conectar con un público masivo pueden adoptarse tres estrategias. Aristóteles decía que hay que apelar al ethos, pathos o al logos, para conseguir la atención del público y convencerlo de lo que uno dice. Las películas son una forma de comunicación de masas, luego también utilizan estas tres estrategias para conectar con la audiencia, resultando, así, los tres tipos de películas que adelantaba.

Antes de seguir hay que puntualizar que todas las películas apelan al ethos, pathos y logos en cierta manera, pero se diferencian en que unas dan más peso a uno de ellos que a los otros dos. De esta manera, el primer tipo de película que podemos encontrar es la que da más peso al ethos.

¿Pero qué es el maldito ethos, os estaréis preguntando? El ethos es la autoridad, credibilidad que la audiencia confiere al emisor del mensaje (en este caso, al director, productora, guionista de la película). Existen tres tipos de autoridad que la audiencia asocia al emisor. La resultante de la percepción del emisor ANTES, la de DURANTE y la de DESPUÉS de haber visto la película. De esta forma, las películas que se basan en el ethos conectan con la audiencia:

ANTES aprovechando la fama del director o alguien del equipo técnico/artístico para vendernos la moto de que vayamos a verla.

DURANTE no con una gran historia profunda y compleja, sino a través de un impecable uso de la técnica que…

TRAS LA PELÍCULA decantanta la balanza hacía un “me gusta” o un “la odio” entre las expectativas que generó en nosotros antes y lo que hemos podido ver.


Una clara película-ethos es Avatar. La campaña publicitaria se basaba en el lema “dirigida por James Cameron, autor de Terminator, Titanic etc.” y su historia era una simple copia de Pocahontas, pero estaba magistralmente dirigida y destilaba buena técnica por doquier (hasta ahora es la única película 3D que he podido soportar), por lo que dejaba buen sabor de boca al final. Otro ejemplo, sería Knight and day con Tom Cruise y Cameron Díaz, solo que la credibilidad del director y los actores (que eran la base del ethos de esta película) se fue al garete cuando el público vio los San Fermines en Sevilla.


Si subimos un escalón nos encontramos con las películas-pathos. El pathos equivale a los sentimientos, las emociones. Las películas que apelan al pathos son aquellas que conectan con la audiencia a través de los sentimientos. Estaremos todos de acuerdo en que esto implica una dificultad algo mayor que intentar convencer al espectador con “esta película es buena porque una anterior que hice era también buena”. Además, la intención principal de estas películas no suele ser la de entretener (como las anteriores, que podrían clasificarse como producto industrial empaquetado), por lo que resulta más difícil conseguir que el público decida entrar en una sala que proyecta una película-pathos. Por ejemplo, es más difícil que, a priori, una persona que va al cine para evadirse elija ver Crash (historias cruzadas, crítica social, personajes complejos…) antes que una película de acción.

Sin embargo, una vez que alguien elige ver una película de este tipo, el pathos se convierte en la estrategia más fácil para conectar con el público (más incluso que el ethos, que siempre pende de un finísimo hilo). Y es que los sentimientos de las personas son como resortes que saltan dentro de nosotros sin que nos demos cuenta y una vez que lo hacen, la película nos engulle. Puede que no haya historia sólida, pero si el director consigue que afloren nuestros sentimientos captará nuestra atención hasta el final sin gastar mucha energía.

Por eso, el drama es el género mejor tratado por la crítica cinematográfica. El drama se sirve una y otra vez del pathos para transmitirnos sus historias. A poco que esté bien contada y tenga un pequeño toque de calidad, caeremos rendidos a los pies del director. Gracias a apretar los resortes de los sentimientos nos tendrá en vilo durante dos horas sin que realicemos ningún esfuerzo mental. Es por eso también que es el tipo de películas que a más personas llegan, puesto que todas las personas sienten de forma involuntaria.

En el escalón más alto, encontramos a las películas-logos. El director que hace este tipo de películas escoge el camino más difícil para alcanzar la atención del espectador, puesto que su estrategia se basa en el uso de las ideas y la lógica para captar al público, es decir, en hacer pensar al espectador para mantenerlo enganchado. ¿Por qué es esto lo más difícil? Porque requiere una actividad CONSCIENTE por parte del público (no como en las películas-pathos que sentir es INCOSNCIENTE) y es bien sabido que la mayoría de la gente no está por la labor cuando entra en una sala de cine.

A menudo, este tipo de películas dan pie a un uso más creativo de los recursos audiovisuales. A través de símbolos y metáforas visuales transmiten esas ideas abstractas en las que se basa su modo de captar atención. Por ello, suelen ser bastante maltratadas por el público y la crítica. No suelen gustar porque no las entienden (no porque sean tontos, sino porque no van con la actitud necesaria para entender la película y, al no comprenderla, la rechazan) y porque ven el despliegue de recursos audiovisuales como gratuito al no captar la intención que hay detrás.

Empezamos el post hablando de Origen, que es un claro ejemplo de película-logos. Otras de este tipo son cualquiera de las películas de Nolan, Matrix, V de Vendetta y algunas películas de superhéroes como Batman que, bajo la corteza de historieta de acción/ciencia ficción, tratan de transmitir ciertas ideas abstractas y críticas bastante profundas. Esta intención suele ser obviada por una enorme parte del público y la crítica como consecuencia de la pasividad con la que se arrastran a la sala del cine. Esto alimenta un estereotipo de película vacía.

De esta forma, uno puede llegar a oír, que Origen es una película palomitera. A mi entender, una película palomitera es aquella que no exige ningún esfuerzo mental ni sentimental y que requiere del sujeto que coma palomitas para generar la actividad cerebral suficiente como para no dormirse en la butaca del cine. De esta manera, el único tipo de películas que podríamos decir que son palomiteras son las de la primera categoría: las películas-ethos. Esas que lo único que ofrecen es una lista de nombres famosos y un par de horas de divertimento (si están bien hechas). Sin duda, Origen en particular y el cine de Nolan en general no pertenecen a esta categoría y a quien piense lo contrario le recomiendo que se lea otra vez el post.
